$35 world’s cheapest tablet launched

Finally, $35 tablet for which world is waiting from more than year, finally launched but its not named as Sakshat now, neither it was manufactured by HCL this time. It was not manufactured by any indian company this time.
Though still it comes with Android Froyo 2.2 Version OS named as ‘Akash’.
Datawind, the maker of world’s cheapest tablet, is getting components from foreign nations and assembling the device in India.
Director of Unique Mobinet Surfers Pvt Ltd (a distribution partner of Datawind), said, “We are getting the components from outside but we are assembling them in India.” He was unwilling to divulge any further details about the product.

What is the Price ?
Students can get this tablet at a price of nearly Rs. 1,730 but the exact price for the Aakash is nearly Rs. 2,276, which the government is paying for its procurement. According to official website, aakash tablet will be available commercially at Rs. 2,999.

As per official website, you can use unlimited internet on UbiSlate aka Aakash tablet at a montly price of Rs 98/- only.

Experts from the industry believe that any device can cost cheap if it is totally imported. If the components of the device are imported and then it is assembled in India, it cannot be as cheap as it is priced. So the world waits to watch the pricing strategy of ‘Aakash’, the $35 tablet device being launched in India today.

Commenting on the project, Mahendra Jain, managing director, Lakshmi Access Communications Systems (LACS), said “If the Government gives us so much of support, we can also do the same. It is not a big deal.”

The device includes 800 different components, which actually come from all over the world–29 per cent of the components used are from S Korea, 24 per cent from China, 16 per cent from India, 16 per cent from US, and 5 per cent from other parts of the world.

The low cost tablet is primarily meant for educational purposes comes with wi-fi connectivity feature. It may also feature a 2GB SD memory card with a mini and full USB port, a 32 GB expandable memory slot, a miniSD card and a SIM card slot.
